Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis
This article is a journal about the experience of a person who underwent surgery for Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP). It describes symptoms of an RRP, procedure of the surgery and personal experience. This article also contains excellent pictures of the mouth taken by an ENT Microscope. Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP) or also known as Laryngeal Papillomatosis is a disease that affects the respiratory tract, caused by the Human Papillomavirus which causes a tumor to grow on the larynx, lungs or trachea. The article starts with the author on when he first notices the symptoms; a change to his voice which gradually grew worse. He was then diagnosed to have polyps. Polyps are small sac like growth or inflammation of the nasal mucosa. He then continues to narrate his first operation, the improvement on his voice but later returning to the original problem.
Using an ENT microscope shows an image of the thorax with the growth of the papilloma, a surgery was the scheduled. Twenty two weeks after the first operation still using an ENT microscope the disease progress through the vocal folds. A second surgery was scheduled. An equipment called Tuned Pulse Dye Laser or PDL was used during this operation. Two weeks after the surgery improvement was noticeable with only a lump (which is described as granumola) showing where the papilloma existed before. Prognosis of a reoccurrence was explained by the doctor. Surgery on the removal of granumola was then scheduled. Two weeks after again using an ENT microscope attached with a flexible scope passing through the nose a picture was take and there was no noticeable reoccurrence. This all changed after a check up which was done on day of November, 15 weeks after the surgery. The papilloma returned and surgery was again to be done using the Tuned Pulse Dye Laser under local anesthesia.
Surgery using Tuned Pulse Dye Laser procedure is explained in this article. Starting with the spraying of anesthesic and decongestant through the right nostril which was followed by lidocane down to the throat. A thin tube for suctioning was inserted through the nostril. A flexible scope was then inserted to the right nostril. The author continues to narrate the procedure and difficulties he experience. An image taken by ENT microscope shows the state after the procedure.
As the name implies RRP reoccur even after a number of surgeries. RRP causes great discomfort for the patient as frequent visits in short intervals are required for check ups as to monitor the progress of treatment and or progression of the disease.
